Tinta de Toro comes from Toro in Zamora, Spain, with roots traditionally traced back to Roman times. Hot summers, cold winters, and dry, stony soils shaped a hardy grape. Some of the region's vines survived the phylloxera crisis that devastated European vineyards in the 1800s, helping preserve vineyards with vines now well over 100 years old.

The story even crosses the Atlantic. According to the history preserved in Toro, wine made from Tinta de Toro was chosen for Christopher Columbus' voyage to America. Fray Diego de Deza, a native of Toro and private confessor to Queen Isabel, knew the wine's reputation for strength and its ability to keep on long journeys, and helped bring it aboard the expedition.

The same local story links La Pinta, one of Columbus' ships, to the large quantity of red wine carried in its cellars. Whether you come for the history or the flavor, Toro has a story that reaches far beyond the vineyard.
